Cleaning Your Outdoor Patio Furniture

This question is asked by a lot of people.  However, this is a real generic question and to give you a good answer, I will need to break it down into the best way to clean different types of patio furniture.

How to Clean Plastic Patio Furniture

Plastic patio furniture is very popular because it is inexpensive to purchase and it is easy to store.  It is not very heavy so it can be taken to the basement and stored there over the winter.  However, even when you store plastic patio furniture in the basement it still gets dusty and that dust can be difficult to remove.

To get plastic patio furniture really clean, I take a bucket of hot water mixed with a good strong dish detergent or Lysol® Brand liquid.  Depending on how dirty the plastic furniture is, you might want to put a little more of the liquid or detergent in the bucket than usual.  A scrub brush with a handle on it works great.  Once you have scrubbed the piece of furniture thoroughly, rinse it off with a hose.  Plastic dries quickly in the sun so you may not even have to dry it off.  If you have marks on the plastic that wont’ come off, chances are they will never come off.  You can also try bleach on the plastic, but if you try a cleanser, you will put scratches on the plastic that won’t come off.  That is the best way I know of to clean really dirty plastic patio furniture.

How to Clean PVC Patio Furniture

PVC Patio Furniture is manufactured to not stain, peel or chip.  So, cleaning PVC Patio Furniture is pretty simple.  You can scrub the furniture with a mixture of dish detergent or Lysol® Brand Cleaner and then simply hose it off.  If you find that there are stains on the PVC itself, you should contact the store where you purchased it and check to see if the staining is covered under the warranty.

How to Clean Outdoor Wood Patio Furniture

Wood patio furniture is a little different than plastic or PVC.  If you have a lot of stains on your wood patio furniture, then you can use a power washer on low setting to clean off the furniture.  Make sure that you only use a very low setting.  If you use a higher setting, you will probably end of splintering the wood and sometimes this damage cannot be reversed through sanding.

If your wood patio furniture is not stained, just dirty, a hose will do the trick or mild detergent.  I always use a mild detergent because I don’t want to damage the finish.  After you clean the furniture, check to see if you need to do some fine sanding and then re-finish.

As far as cleaning Teak Wood patio furniture, I like to take a damp cloth and just wipe off the dirt.  If the teak is really dirty, then I use a teak wood cleaner and then follow up with some teak oil.

If you have any particular staining on your furniture that you have a problem removing, let me know.  I will give you suggestions.
